In a recent post, I wrote about surfboard roof racks and the differences between hard and soft roof racks. For this post, I am going to talk all about all you need to know about soft surfboard roof racks. I’m going to cover features, benefits, top brands, FAQs, and some simple tips. These easy-to-use surfboard racks offer an easy solution for surfers who need a way to carry their boards. So, let’s dive right into the ins and outs of soft surfboard roof racks!
Features of Soft Surfboard Roof Racks
Soft Rack Portability
Soft surfboard roof racks are lightweight and can be easily stored when not in use. For me, when I don’t have one of my boards on the roof of the car, the racks get tossed in the trunk.
Easy Installation
Installation is as simple as putting the racks on the roof, running straps through the car, and then tightening them up. For the most part, it takes me three or four minutes to set up my car to head to the beach. The first few times I put soft surfboard racks on my car it took a little longer because I was worried I was doing it wrong. Nowadays though, it is quick and painless to get them installed.
Protection
Most soft racks come with padding to protect both your surfboard and car. I was a little worried about scratches ending up on my roof. If that is a concern for you, a buddy suggested I wrap a small towel around the pads that lay on the roof.
Soft Surfboard Rack Capacity
Depending on the brand and model, soft racks can usually carry from a minimum of one to six surfboards. The way I see it, if you have to move around more than 6 surfboards at a time, you should probably get a hard rack.
In more than ten years of surfing, I’ve never carried more than 4 boards. So when shopping for a soft rack think about how many boards you’re going to be stapping to the car. The way I see it for most people is that you’ll probably be carrying three or fewer.
Advantages
- Cost-Effective: Soft surfboard racks are less expensive than permanent hard racks.
- Versatile: They can be used on most cars and SUVs. And as I already mentioned, they can be removed when you’re not carrying surfboards.
- Nothing Permanent: Soft racks are a perfect solution for those who don’t want to install a fixed rack system.
Disadvantages
- Less Secure: They might not be as secure as hard racks, especially at high speeds or in strong winds.
- Potential for Noise: The straps can sometimes cause wind noise while driving. When cruising down the highway the strap can end up sounding like a buzzsaw on the roof. A simple solution is to give the roof straps a few twists so they don’t lay completely flat on the roof.
- Weight Limit: Soft roof racks may not support as much weight as a permanent roof rack system.

Common Soft Surfboard Roof Rack FAQs
Can soft roof racks damage my car? Soft roof racks are designed with padding to protect your car, but improper installation or over-tightening can cause scratches or dents. Always follow the manufacturer’s instructions.
How many surfboards can I carry? Most soft roof racks can carry between 1 to 3 surfboards, but check the manufacturer’s recommendations for maximum load capacity.
Are they safe at highway speeds? Soft board racks are generally safe at moderate speeds if properly installed. However, they might not be as stable as hard racks at high speeds or in strong winds.
Can I use a soft roof rack in rainy weather? Yes, but be mindful that wet straps might loosen. Check the tightness of the straps periodically during long drives in wet conditions.
AdditionalSoft Rack Tips
Safety Precautions: Double-check that the surfboards are securely fastened before driving and stop periodically on long trips to ensure the straps are still secure. Ensure the surfboards are positioned correctly (fins up and towards the front) to minimize wind resistance.
